FLUORESCENCE FOR THE MASSES

Ferro forehearth color technology makes fluorescent glass commercially viable for mass production
Treated with fluorescent materials, paints, polymers and even banknotes that appear clear under natural light can glow a visible color when exposed to light radiation of a certain wavelength. (Think blacklight, without the velvet posters.) But the effect has not been easy to produce in glass, especially in commercial quantities.
At its St. Dizier location in France, Ferro committed to changing this by developing forehearth color technology and several complementary fluorescent colors.
Exciting New Applications
Ferro’s forehearth color technology enables high-volume manufacturing of fluorescent colored glass for such applications as beverage and cosmetics glass bottles and tableware applications. The products comply with REACH and food migration standards. Drink glasses at the nightclub become an attractive accessory and create a whole new kind of mood lighting at the dinner table. Luxurious glass packaged products such as cosmetics outshine the competition displayed in cabinets “excited” with fluorescent light. Interesting effect can even be created when fluoresced glass is highlighted by a laser beam from a distance (wavelength = 405nm).
Technically Savvy
Where the production of special glasses and colors are difficult or impossible to produce in the glass tank, Ferro forehearth technology excels and is even flexible enough to be available either in frit form or as concentrate pearls, depending on customer preference.
Ferro’s new products are introduced into the forehearth using the company’s standard coloring systems at feed rates typically up to 3%, and can be used to create fluorescent effects in soda-lime, borosilicate or opal glasses. Both clear (flint) glass and glasses colored with the usual metallic oxides can be energized by these new Ferro materials. With adaptability and wide application possibilities, Ferro’s forehearth color technology can be the burst of color your product needs to stand out in today’s marketplace.
